Access Statement

The comfort, safety and well- being of all our guests is of paramount importance and with this in mind we hope the following information will be useful when considering your stay with us. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us, as we will do our utmost to facilitate access for all.

The Charterhouse: A Guest House offering 10 rooms, which includes two family suites. The rooms are as follows: one large double/ twin bedded room, 4 double bedded rooms one family room with one double bed and two single beds and two, family suites – each suite consists of two rooms, one double room and one single/twin room. The bedrooms are on all four floors. There is a dining room where breakfast takes place and a guest lounge and terrace. 

Smoking: Our policy of no-smoking applies throughout the building. Any guest found smoking within the building will be charged £100 to cover cleaning and reallocation costs, if necessary. There are designated smoking areas outside the building, within the gardens.

Outdoor areas: The Charterhouse has a number of outdoor areas with seating, which are on 3 different levels. All areas can be accessed from the driveway or from the garden steps. These outdoor steps may be slippery when wet and there is signage throughout to remind guests to take additional care.

Pre-Arrival

Check in is usually available from 3-8pm. Please feel free to use the car park to allow you to begin exploring the local area, should you arrive before 3pm. If you are travelling on public transport, we will happily store your luggage, with prior notification. If you require check in later than 8pm, please let us know in advance.

The Charterhouse is approximately a half a mile from Torquay railway station being an approximate 10- minute walk. The Charterhouse is approximately 1.5 miles from the coach station, which will take in the region of 30 minutes to walk.

It will take approximately 3 minutes to walk to the sea front and a further 20 minutes to walk into the town centre, which is a reasonably level walk. A bus service is available close to the property with a regular bus service from the sea front to most tourist attractions. The Charterhouse is also approximately just over half a mile from Cockington Country Park which can be reached by walking along a private path through the Water Meadows or along the Cockington Lane and should take in the region of 17 minutes.

Arrival: The main entrance to the property is from Cockington Lane up a sloping gravel driveway approximately 50 metres in length. There is a large gravel car park for guests at the entrance to the property and parking is available for 8/9 cars. Please ensure you park facing the garden wall and Cockington Lane, to prevent guests being blocked in and to maximise the use of the space. 

Guests may drive up the drive to the front entrance, where luggage may be off-loaded. Assistance with luggage is available upon request. We do have one parking space immediately outside our garden rooms and this is available for guests who may find walking more difficult. The car park is illuminated by sensor lights in the evening and the drive has lighting, which is on throughout the night. There are two steps up to the front door with a handrail and one further step from the Reception area into the hallway.

Indoor Public Areas

The guest lounge is situated on the ground floor and close to the main entrance, with no additional steps. The dining room is situated on the lower ground floor.  There are 12 steps down to the dining room, with a handrail.

Special dietary considerations can be catered for with prior notification; however, we reserve the right not to serve guests who suffer from life threatening allergies. 

Rooms

Keys: Guests are provided with a conventional key room key plus a key to the main entrance. Lost keys will be charged at £20.00 to replace. We kindly ask you do not remove keys from the ring provided.

Garden Rooms: The Family Garden Room has its own independent access. Although it is on a level with the patio there is a slight threshold of approximately 12cm to enter the room. This Garden Room has a further entrance/exit, with one step of approximately 15 cm to exit the room. This is situated next door to the back of the Dining Room. The smaller Garden Room, which is a double     en- suite room, also has its own independent entrance and is level with the patio, with an approximate 12cm threshold. This room is also placed next door to the Dining room.

Guests who may have slight mobility issues are able to park their car outside the Garden Room, on prior arrangement, to avoid walking up the drive. Both Garden Rooms are also dog friendly, with hard floors and direct access to the garden. There is an additional charge of £7.00 per night, to allow for the extra cleaning involved. Dogs are not permitted in the public, indoor areas and are also not permitted to sleep on the beds or furniture. An additional charge of up to £100 will apply where bed linen, towels or furniture have been soiled by muddy paws! Dog towels are available on request.

Ground Floor: The Compact Double and Large double/Twin Room are located on this floor, close to the main entrance and lounge, with no additional stairs. There are 2 steps of approximately 15cm to access the terrace from the French doors of the lounge.

First Floor: There are 13 steps from the Reception Hall up to a half landing and then a further 3 steps to the Riviera, Superior and Interconnecting Room. All these rooms are carpeted and have en suite shower rooms. The shower rooms either have a cushion floor covering or laminated flooring.

Second Floor: There are a further set of 15 steps up to the Bay View Family Suite. This suite has two rooms, one with double bed and one with 1 double and 1 single sofa bed, when needed for children. There is one large en- suite bathroom with separate shower cubicle from the lounge/double room. These two rooms have their own entrance door and are private from the other rooms.

Showers have adjustable shower heads and are temperature controlled. Non- slip shower and bathmats are available. All showers are walk-in with a threshold of approximately 15cm.

Additional Beds: A travel cot can be provided on request, for most rooms, and with prior arrangement. There is no additional charge for this facility. An additional child bed can be arranged in the Family Interconnecting Suite/Family Suite for an additional £20 per night.

Fire Safety: All rooms are accessed via a regulation fire door. There is a remote fire alarm system in place with appropriate audible alarms. If specific emergency arrangements are required, please inform us before or on arrival. Suitable signage with fire information is visible throughout the property and an emergency lighting system installed on each floor.
